THE DESIGN
A pale legendary creature emerges from diluted ink, its amber eyes held within looping green vines and a flowering branch. The composition is built from quiet movement: a low gaze, an unbroken vine, brushwork that gathers and then lets the figure breathe.
Every element belongs to one image — Feifei, its ink-wash body, the green vines, branch and scattered marks — creating a design that reads as a living passage rather than a fixed emblem.
CULTURAL STORY & SYMBOLIC MEANING
Feifei (朏朏) appears in the Middle Mountains section of the Shan Hai Jing, in an entry for Mount Huo. The text describes a cat-like beast with a white tail and mane, and associates it in literary language with setting sorrow aside. This design is a contemporary artistic interpretation of that brief source, not a reproduction of a historic talisman or a promise of any result.
Within this composition, the association is carried by the creature's lowered posture and the vines' unhurried path. The Wood-and-Water reading comes from green growth and fluid ink: an artistic framework for stillness, release and gentle continuity.
COMPOSITION & TATTOO TRANSLATION
Designed for an upper back or shoulder-blade placement at approximately 16–22 cm, where the pale body and trailing branch can remain open. It can also be proofed at a more compact scale for the upper sternum or side waist when the vines are given clear breathing room.
Keep Feifei, its eyes, vines, branch and ink-wash silhouette together. The design must not be mirrored, cropped or redrawn as a generic animal; your artist may only open the tightest intersections for long-term clarity.
